How do you know if you have bed bugs?

Bedbugs are small insects that feed off of human or animal blood. Adult bedbugs usually have flat, brownish colored bodies, though their bodies become swollen and develop a deep-reddish color after they’ve eaten. They are about the size of an apple seed (about 5-7 mm long) and they do not have wings.

Bedbugs prefer to feed on their hosts at night and often leave a trail of itchy, red bites that form either a line or a cluster, usually on the arms, legs, neck, or face.

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

Examine your body before bed - if you wake up with itchy trail-like or clustered bites on your face, neck, arms or legs, that is a strong indicator that you may have bed bugs.

Look for small blood stains on your sheets and pillowcases. Also check the corners of your mattress or the corners of walls for small rust colored dots of bedbug excrement.

Bites alone are not enough to confirm the existence of bedbugs.

Look for egg cases or shed exoskeletons near or on your bed.

If you have an infestation of bed bugs, they can sometimes exude a sweet and/or musty odor.

Bedbugs like to live in small crevices in furniture. Examine your mattress thoroughly, including the boxspring and the frame. Look closely at seams in the frame and peel back fabric stapled to wood if you have to. Also be sure to examine any furniture near your bed.
